Chromium-6 Spill Near Ann Arbor Raises Concerns
A chrome plating factory recently spilled a large quantity of hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) into the Huron River, just downstream of Wixom. In light of this, the state of Michigan is asking its residents to avoid contact.
Chromium-6 comes from the production of stainless steel, textile dyes, wood preservation, leather tanning and other manufacturing. Its primary concern is its carcinogenic qualities. The company responsible for the leak is also a producer of PFAS chemicals, a potentially harmful toxin that is chiefly the reason behind the DO NOT EAT FISH advisory in the river.
The Huron River flows through Oakland, Livingston, Washtenaw, Wayne and Monroe Counties. The biggest city on the river is Ann Arbor.
